My Online Boyfriend Is the King

EDITORIAL REVIEW / CRITIC'S TAKE

Is My Online Boyfriend Is the King Worth Your Time?

NetShort's "My Online Boyfriend Is the King" hooks viewers with a premise that is as absurd as it is irresistible: a modern woman's virtual romance turns out to be with a time-traveling monarch. The early episodes lean hard into the thrill of discovery, as cryptic messages and impossible coincidences build a magnetic pull. The show's vertical format amplifies the urgency, with each short episode ending on a cliffhanger that makes it dangerously easy to keep tapping for the next reveal. It's a classic short-form binge, engineered to keep you swiping.

Community discussions across Reddit and MyDramaList reveal a consensus that the central chemistry carries the day. Viewers praise the female lead's agency—she's not merely a damsel but an active investigator piecing together the truth—and the king's dual identity is handled with just enough intrigue to keep the trope fresh. However, the revenge and betrayal subplots often feel rushed, with villains whose schemes are exposed in a blink, leaving some fans wishing for more nuanced antagonism. The public confrontation climax is a crowd-pleaser, but the pacing in the middle episodes draws criticism for leaning too heavily on misunderstandings that could be resolved with a single honest conversation. Still, the satisfying comeuppance of the scheming rivals and the couple's reconciliation deliver the emotional payoff audiences crave.

For those who relish hidden-identity romances with a time-travel twist, this drama justifies the coins spent. It's best suited for fans of quick, trope-heavy escapes who don't mind a little melodrama with their romance. The replay value is moderate—the reveal loses its shock on a second watch—but the binge factor remains high. If you're in the mood for a guilty-pleasure marathon that blends modern dating with royal intrigue, this king is worth a coronation.
