The Chubby Crown Prince's Makeover

EDITORIAL REVIEW / CRITIC'S TAKE

Is The Chubby Crown Prince's Makeover Worth Your Time?

The Chubby Crown Prince's Makeover opens with a tantalizing premise: a rotund, underestimated royal who harbors a secret superpower and a hidden handsome form. In the crowded vertical short drama landscape, this series hooks viewers by promising a classic ugly-duckling transformation wrapped in palace intrigue and time-travel mystery. Early episodes waste no time establishing the prince's humiliation and the princess's peril, creating immediate narrative momentum. The allure lies in the dual fantasy of physical reinvention and rightful ascension, a combination that keeps audiences swiping for the next reveal.

Community discussions across Reddit and MyDramaList reveal a consensus that the drama delivers satisfying trope execution, particularly the revenge arc and hidden identity. Viewers celebrate the prince's agency in outsmarting the empress dowager, though some note the princess's role occasionally reduces to damsel-in-distress. The chemistry between leads is praised as sweet, if not scorching, and the babies trope is seen as a heartwarming epilogue. However, pacing criticisms emerge in the middle episodes, where misunderstandings feel stretched and melodrama borders on repetitive. The superpower element is a divisive addition—some find it a fun twist, others deem it unnecessary deus ex machina. Overall, audiences appreciate the cathartic climax and villain downfall but wish for tighter writing in the second act.

For viewers seeking a bingeable historical romance with a satisfying transformation arc, this drama justifies its 60-episode commitment, though coin spenders might skim the filler. It's best suited for fans of underdog tales and palace revenge, who will relish the grand banquet reveal and the prince's triumphant rise. Replay value is moderate—the climax is rewatchable, but the journey there lacks the nuance for repeated viewings. A solid, if formulaic, entry in the genre.
