The Summer My Heart Stopped

EDITORIAL REVIEW / CRITIC'S TAKE

Is The Summer My Heart Stopped Worth Your Time?

ReelShort's "The Summer My Heart Stopped" opens with a premise that is pure catnip for vertical-drama devotees: a decade after high school, Alex stumbles upon a cache of vlogs left by Isabel, his former best friend, and the recordings detonate everything he thought he knew. The hook is immediate and merciless—each episode peels back another layer of a long-buried misunderstanding, and the show's 66-episode structure keeps the momentum taut with cliffhanger reveals and emotional gut punches. It's the kind of setup that makes viewers instinctively reach for the next episode, drawn by the promise of a truth that's been withheld for far too long.

Across forums like Reddit and MyDramaList, the community consensus is that the drama's central trope—the all-too-late revelation—is executed with a sincerity that elevates it above typical short-form fare. Audiences praise the slow-burn chemistry between Alex and Isabel, and the way the vlogs gradually expose her hidden feelings and fatal illness without tipping into outright manipulation. Yet the same viewers note that the misunderstanding that drives them apart feels contrived, and that Alex's complicity in Isabel's bullying strains credibility. The middle stretch, they argue, leans too heavily on melodramatic pacing, with some episodes feeling like filler before the devastating final act. Still, the emotional payoff is widely celebrated as one of the genre's more effective gut punches.

For those who can forgive a few narrative shortcuts, "The Summer My Heart Stopped" justifies its runtime with a finale that lands with genuine force. It's best suited to viewers who relish tragic romances and don't mind a protagonist whose regret is the point. The binge value is high—once the vlogs start rolling, it's hard to stop—but the replay factor is lower, given the story's inherent heaviness. A solid, if imperfect, entry in the vertical drama canon.
