EDITORIAL REVIEW / CRITIC'S TAKE
Is We Bought Mommy’s Ex to Be Our Dad Worth Your Time?
ShortMax's "We Bought Mommy's Ex to Be Our Dad" hooks viewers with a premise that is as absurd as it is irresistible: two twins purchase their mother's former lover to be their father. The early episodes lean into this high-concept setup, quickly establishing a world where money can literally buy a second chance at family. The narrative momentum is relentless, propelled by the twins' scheme and the looming threat of the mafia, ensuring that viewers are immediately invested in the chaotic blend of romance and danger.
Community discussions across Reddit and MyDramaList reveal a consensus that the drama's success hinges on the chemistry between Cassian and Elodie, whose fraught history is slowly unraveled through flashbacks and hidden identity tropes. Audiences celebrate Elodie's agency as a mother protecting her children, and the revenge arc against the jealous rival is savored for its satisfying comeuppance. However, critics note that the misunderstanding trope is stretched thin, with some pacing issues in the middle episodes where melodrama overshadows character development. The arson climax and hospital rescue are praised for their intensity, but a few viewers found the villain's downfall predictable. Overall, the community agrees that the show excels in delivering emotional beats and romantic tension, even if it occasionally stumbles into overwrought territory.
For those who relish a binge-worthy mix of revenge, hidden heirs, and second-chance romance, this drama justifies the coins spent. It is best suited for fans of vertical short dramas who appreciate fast-paced storytelling and are willing to overlook minor pacing flaws. While not groundbreaking, its replay value lies in the satisfying resolution and the cathartic defeat of the villain, making it a solid addition to the genre.
